When should i start wedding dress shopping?
Here's What Every Bride Should Know About Dress Shopping Timelines
Planning a wedding comes with many exciting moments—and choosing your dream dress is one of the biggest! But one of the most common questions we hear at our bridal shop is:
“When should I order my wedding dress?”
If your dress will be special ordered (made just for you)—which is how we work—timing is everything. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect and when to begin shopping so your dress arrives stress-free and perfectly on time.
Step 1: Start Shopping Early (12–15 Months Before Your Wedding)
While it may feel early, the best time to begin shopping for your dress is at least 12 months before your wedding. Here’s why:
Our special-ordered gowns typically take 9 to 12 months to arrive.
You’ll want time to try on multiple styles without pressure.
Some designers require longer production times during peak seasons.
Shopping early means you’ll have access to the full collection without rush fees.
Pro Tip: Book your first appointment as soon as you have your wedding date and venue. Your dress should reflect your setting and season.
Step 2: Place Your Order (9–12 Months Before the Wedding)
Once you’ve said "yes" to the dress, we’ll take your measurements and place the order with the designer. At this point:
We secure your gown in your chosen size and color.
The dress is made-to-order—not pulled from a warehouse.
You’ll receive updates on production and estimated delivery.
Step 3: Dress Arrival & Fittings (3–4 Months Before the Wedding)
When your gown arrives, we’ll schedule your first fitting. Most brides need 2 to 3 fittings to ensure a perfect fit. Alterations may include:
Hemming
Taking in/letting out seams
Adjusting straps or sleeves
Bustle creation
Be sure to bring your wedding shoes and undergarments to every fitting.
Step 4: Final Fitting & Pick-Up (2–4 Weeks Before)
By now, your gown is nearly wedding-ready. In your final fitting, we’ll do one last check to make sure everything fits like a dream. After this:
Your dress will be steamed and prepped for pickup.
We’ll walk you through storage and transport tips to keep it pristine.
What If You're On a Tight Timeline?
If you’re less than 9 months from your wedding, don’t panic.
We can explore:
Rush options (available for many designers at an added fee)
